3 Tips For Effortless Cooking

Cooking can be a challenge when you’re a Spoonie. Standing up for a long period of time in a hot room can lead to disastrous consequences. I used to love cooking and baking before I got POTS, but now I can’t even stand up whilst the kettle boils. If your illness requires you to change your diet in any way, it may mean that you have to spend more time cooking than you used to. There are a few things you can invest in to make cooking a bit easier on yourself such as a stool so you can sit down, a slow cooker to do all the hard work for you and pre-chopped veg to save time and effort.

My Top 3 Cooking Tips

1. Batch cook

It takes the same amount of effort to cook 2 portions as it does to cook 4 portions. Cook multiple portions at once when you’re feeling well enough to do so and freeze the rest for days when you don’t want to cook.

2. Cook simple meals

Cook easy, simple meals with minimal ingredients that take less than 1 hour to prepare and cook. Check out my favourite easy meal recipes below.

3. Buy pre-prepared ingredients

There’s no shame in buying store-bought sauce or pre-chopped veg if that makes your life easier.

I keep ingredients close to where I am going to use them. Like all my smoothie ingredients are near my blender etc. ” – @the_homebound_optimist

Microwave and rice cooker (not just for rice, I use it as a cooker that is safe to leave as won’t boil dry) and making more portions when you do cook.” – @therehn

Spiced Butternut Squash Soup by Gimme Some Oven
I just love having soup on days when my nausea makes it difficult to eat solid food.
This recipe can be cooked in a slow cooker or in a pan and uses my favourite spices- cinnamon and cayenne pepper. As you’re making it yourself, you can make it as spicy or as plain as you want.

Fajita Pasta by Good Housekeeping
A twist on the classic fajita’s, this dish is one of my Husband’s favourites and it’s something that even he can make by himself.

Slow Cooker Bolognese by Savvy in Somerset
This is my favourite slow cooker recipe for batch cooking. We use lean turkey mince, but you can also use lamb or beef. I can usually make enough for 8 meals from this recipe.

This recipe is a bit labour intensive as you are required to crush a bunch of Oreos. For me, this is a special occasion recipe as you can make it the day before the event and leave it to set in the fridge overnight.

Best Brownie Mix by Crazy for Crust
Brownies are the best sweet treat by a mile and mixing the dry ingredients in advance will save you time when you want to make them.
