If you want to start refashioning and upcycling your old clothes, t-shirts are the best item, to begin with. In this tutorial, I will show you how to upcycle an old men’s t-shirt into a cute summer top. This requires minimal sewing as jersey t-shirt fabric does not need to be hemmed.

Easy Summer Top Upcycle

I made these summer tops out of old t-shirts that I don’t wear anymore. The straps are made out of t-shirt yarn. If you don’t know how to make t-shirt yarn, check out this easy t-shirt yarn tutorial.

You will need

  • An old t-shirt
  • scrap t-shirt fabric or t-shirt yarn
  • Fabric scissors or rotary cutter
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread

Step 1

Turn the t-shirt inside out and remove the sleeves using scissors or a rotary cutter.

Step 2

Make a straight cut at the base of the neckline to remove the top half of the t-shirt.

Step 3

Straighten the edges of the sleeves using a rotary cutter and ruler.

Step 4

Fold in and hem the top two edges.

Step 5

[optional] Make a slit in the centre of the front edge if you would like to have a bow detail on the front.

Step 6

Thread some t-shirt yarn through to make the straps. Tie in the front where you made the slit if you would like a bow detail. Check out this tutorial if you want to know how to make t-shirt yarn.

You have now completed your easy summer top and it is ready to wear!
