I’ve had POTS for almost four years. I’ve tried a variety of medications, supplements and products to help alleviate my debilitating symptoms. Hydration is key when you have POTS and I use a number of different products to help me stay hydrated throughout the day. Here are a few of my favourite products that I use to manage my POTS symptoms that I wish I’d known about sooner:

1. Hydration Tablets

High 5, O.R.S and Nuun hydration tablets.

Hydration tablets are great for improving your blood volume and stopping those light-headed feelings. I usually have one or two tabs in the morning with the recommended amount of water. They are marketed at runners and athletes, but don’t let that put you off. If you feel like you’re running a marathon every day, then why not treat yourself as if you are. 

I’ve tried three different brands. I currently use High 5 Zero as they are more cost effective. Nuuns are my favourite as they come in a wide variety of flavours and they taste better. But, they are quite pricey if you use them every day. O. R. S are good in a pinch as you can get them at most pharmacies and supermarkets, but they are not as effective as Nuuns or High 5.

2. Max Strength Antiperspirant

Increased sweating has to be the worst symptom of my POTS. I only have to walk two paces and I’m drenched in sweat as if I’ve just run a marathon. I ordered some Driclor from Amazon and after a few weeks, I was no longer sweating through my clothes. I use it three times a week in the evening and that is good enough for me. I also use my regular deodorant every morning as well. The only downside of this product is that it can sting a bit at first. If you have sensitive skin, then this product may not be for you.

3. Water Bottle

I have two different water bottles that I regularly use. I never leave the house without one. I have a large one that I use if I’m going to be out all day and a small one for my handbag I’ve tried many different brands, expensive ones and cheap ones. Here are the ones that I’m using at the moment:

King Do Way 500 mL- This is a cut-price version of the Chilly’s bottle. I’ve been using mine for over a year and I haven’t had any leaks yet. It is well insulated so it will keep your water cool on a hot day. It even comes with a special cleaning sponge. https://amzn.to/2nwft09

Sistema 330 mL bottle– I bought this because I needed something small to fit into my handbag when I was going to the shops. The lid is a twist top and leak-proof because I think they’re actually designed for children. 4. FitBit

I use my FitBit to monitor my heart rate to make sure that it doesn’t go too high. I would recommend one to anyone with POTS as it means you can monitor your HR 24/7 if you want to. You can also track other useful things like sleep and water consumption. Like in these photos (my actual recordings), it will show that you’re in an ‘exercise zone’ when in reality, you probably just stood up and walked somewhere. I also shows your average HR on a graph for the past month so you can easily monitor any changes.

5. Resistance Band and Pilates Ball

My physiotherapist gave me a bunch of Pilates based exercises to do when I first started my graded exercise programme. These types of exercises are great when you’re first starting out as they strengthen your muscles so you can stand up and be more active. When I was ready to ‘level up’ my exercises, I started using the resistance band and Pilates ball to make my muscles work a bit harder. Strengthening my muscles has made the biggest difference to my quality of life. Talk to your doctor or physio to see of these types of exercises are appropriate for you.
